Human Development and Research Centre (HDRC) is registered under aegis of St. Xavier’s Non-formal Education Society (SXNFES) in 1977. With historical legacy of behaviour science and non-formal education, we are known as HDRC widely than SXNFES. HDRC has become well known with ‘Golana case’, referring to massacre of people belonging to scheduled caste (Dalits) and legal battle for the rights of Dalits who are socially excluded, treated as ‘untouchable’ and discriminated based on caste ideology in all spheres of life.
The beginning of 21st century has brought out more challenges for the development sector, namely, earthquake in 2001, communal violence in 2002 and Scheduled Tribe (Adivasi) demanding forest rights and cultivation of forest land, issue of child labour in international market and boycott of products wherein children have been engaged and mutli-fold increase in violence against women. HDRC has contributed significantly in area of Human Rights, Social Justice, Governance and Microfinance with community mobilisation, organization, research, legal action, advocacy with the state and creating people’s movement to achieve their rights for integrated development. Being an organization of Society of Jesus, it has continued historical legacy of conducting academic courses to create cadre for development sector.
