Description :

Alice Morris (Director, HDRC) visited Gola, Vasan & Aeta villages of Dhanera Taluka:

Due to heavy rains between 20 and 27 July 2017, severe damage & losses have occurred in the rural & urban areas of Gujarat. Particularly flood has devastated a lot in the northern part of Gujarat. Heavy rains and floods led to the destruction of houses, property and the loss of lives across the state.

Some villages of Banaskantha district have been completely devastated while some villages have destroyed almost 80%. In rural areas 80% villages of Dhanera and more than 50% villages of Kankrej taluka are badly affected and more than 5000 families from these villages have been hit by flood. There is heavy loss of life, property and livestock. Dhanera only has seen 15-20 deaths due to flood.

After 10 days of disaster, the situation of many villages is still very critical. Gola, Vasan & Aeta are among the most affected villages of Dhanera Taluka.  In these villages where people used to be at home, that places are completely submerged. Agricultural farms & crops have been destroyed and fields are full of mud/silt in these villages. People are still forced to stay in temporary tents due to water logging. In some villages people are waiting for the normalization of the situation by staying in school.

According to the Census 2011, population data of these villages are as follows:

In Dhanera town, the noxious stench of rotting grains and dead animals, a thick layer of silt stuck on every road and lane making it almost impossible to walk. This is just an example of massive devastation that the recent heavy rains and floods have caused in this town. Khankrej taluka is also one of the worst affected taluka. All the villages on river bank were submerged after the flood. Many villages are still not accessible. Although in some villages where water receded, people witnessed the trail of destruction left behind by the nature's fury. Sacks of grains rendered useless were lying on the road and people struggled to remove water from their house.

In this dire condition, relief material (like dry food packets, water pouches, vessels, blankets, clothes, medicines etc) has been distributed to these people by HDRC. On the other hand, the continuous evaluation is also being carrying out of the damage caused by disaster.

A coordinator has been deputed at the taluka level and a point person (PP) made in all villages. PP has been given the responsibility to collect all the information about the loss or damage (like loss of household items, cattle, grocery, crops, number of deceased & injured people), and to prepare information about what is further requirement of these people affected by the flood.

The state government has also announced immediate relief for flood affected people in which financial assistance is being provided to buy grocery items. All the PPs are also continuously monitoring the work of this government help, so that all affected people can get help without any discrimination.
