Securing Urban Poor Rights and Entitlements

Objectives:

Slum collectives of urban poor are formed, strengthened, and take systematic action on issues faced by them and leaders of these collectives to improve their life standard within the targeted project locations in Ahmedabad city

Coverage area and beneficiaries:

Working with SC, ST, OBC, Muslims and other marginalized urban poor communities in 55 slums in Ahmedabad city

Projects and activities:

Formation of collectives (Group of people) of urban poor, Capacity building of collective leaders, Strengthening campaign for urban poor housing rights (AwasAdhikarZumbesh), Networking with like-minded CSOs, CBOs and individuals.

Program benefit

Rights and entitlements accessed by urban poor collectives and leaders
  • 55 collectives comprised of more than 825 members formed and capacitated to demand their rights and entitlements
  • Created and strengthen a cadre of 118 women and 107 men (total 225 leaders) from 55 areas.
  • Media advocacy with data on Open defecation in Ahmedabad city taken seriously by the AMC Commissioner (Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation) resulted in action by the AMC offices in city.
  • PDS services in 28 areas and ICDS services in 20 areas improved due to monitoring by local collectives and leaders.
  • Basic amenities such as Gutter line, Garbage collection, RCC and street lights improved in 13 areas.
  • Awareness on 74th CAA (Constitutional Amendment Act) on community participation in urban governance among the leaders.
Access of various housing schemes under housing policy by the urban poor in Ahmedabad city through AwasAdhikarZumbesh (AAZ).
  • Large number of affected slum dwellers became aware and associated with AwasAdhikarZumbesh to demand pro-poor changes in Slum redevelopment and rehabilitation policy-2010. More than 1600 members of 41 area level committees of AAZ, prepared and submitted Avedanpatra (collective demand application) to the Commissioner of AMC.
  • 9 RTI applications and 60 applications on housing schemes submitted by local collective leaders and AAZ representatives
  • Total 7503 families have been reached to ensure their housing rights from 36 areas
